Stella Zhang is the featured artist of the 2010 Xian Rui (“Fresh & Sharp”) Artist Excellence Exhibition Series. The Exhibition Series is an annual solo exhibition curated by the Chinese Culture Center to showcase the work of exceptional but under-represented and under-recognized Chinese artist in America. In previous years the Series has featured artists such as installation artist Beili Liu from Austin, Texas and fiber Dora Hsiung from Boston, MA.
This year’s artist, Stella Zhang, was born in Beijing and studied in both China and Japan before moving to the United States where she currently lives in Palo Alto, CA. Zhang’s uniquely complex and engaging 0-Viewpoint installation explores the constantly shifting inner landscapes of self and femininity. Her latest work, 0—Viewpoint, which made the debut for Xian Rui 2010, was created to convey the idea that everything came into existence by beginning and ending at zero.

“Like other pieces in the ‘Xian Rui’ series, ‘Zero-Viewpoint’ is meant to challenge the perceptions of art in the Chinese community.” – Alexandria Regilio, San Francisco Chronicle
“Indeed, it nearly hits you on your way in.” – Leanna Yip, sfappeal
“0-Viewpoint is deeply personal, incredibly intimate, and sometimes startling, but a fascinating and thought-provoking meditation.” – Ann Taylor, SF Station
“One can almost hear viewpoints inside the minds of these figures void of expression.” – Carol Koffel, Art Practical
“But Zhang manages to unerringly play with the precarious balance between delicacy and brutality, allowing the installations to question these tensions rather than become about them.” – Michele Carlson, Art Practical
“0-Viewpoint” Catalogues soon to be released and can be purchased at the Chinese Culture Center’s gift shop. Check with our gift shop for availability.

Hello,
Please let me start by saying we had a truly wonderful tour. Our guide was animated and informative, and made this experience come alive.
My issue, and I know I am not alone, was with the choice of the Center to introduce Chinatown to these 11 and 12 year old children with a collection of phalluses, vulvae, eggs and ovaries full of toothpicks, and the 12 months of the artist’s menstrual cycle. It was not particularly comfortable for the children, and the parents were taken aback. The rather dubious artistic value of this exhibit, which from a purely aesthetic point of view was, for me personally, too contrived and anxious to represent art with any importance, was coupled with the inappropriateness of the tour for the age group. Please try to imagine yourselves at this age, when the dreadfully eager guide asks the kids to discuss what their impressions are, and most of the kids are just trying not to die laughing. We had a wonderful tour of Chinatown. Afterwards, all the kids are talking about is that really rather stupid exhibit, which has no relevance to China, Chinatown or the history of the Chinese population in San Francisco.
Thank you again for a great tour, but please, think about omitting this silly segment from a middle-school program.
Thank you,
Vesa Becam
