WOMEN我們, titled with the Mandarin-English homophone 我們, meaning both “women”and “we,” is the debut documentary film by director Walker Lee. Drawing upon the exhibition, curated by Abby Chen in 2011, the film expanded beyond presenting the exhibition that featured works on feminism, genderqueer equality, to street performance and lives of LGBTQ community. The documentary is the first of its kind about issues on sexuality in Shanghai.

Runtime: 86 minutes

MY LITTLE ONE, is a documentary film made by independent artist Er Gao and his collaborator Li Zhe, about the gay and lesbian lifestyles in Guangzhou. The video shows a raw dialogue between the filmmakers and the various members of the LGBTQ community about their stories and their perspectives about their lifestyles in Guangzhou. Er Gao Production is an independent artist collective based on Guangzhou. The group was formed by Er Gao and his group of friends who were all upcoming talents in choreography, music, sculpture and video art to experiment in a new discipline of theater art. Their works are distinguished through their frequent exploration on gender, body and identity.

During intermission we will also screen the short film that documents WOMEN我们 Shanghai exhibition made by Cheng Zhiyuan.

11 AM: AUTUMN GEM explores the extraordinary life of modern China’s first feminist Qiu Jin (1875-1907). A radical women’s rights activist, Qiu Jin attempted an armed uprising against the corrupt Qing Dynasty and became the first female martyr for China’s 1911 Revolution. Compared to a “Chinese Joan of Arc,” she is celebrated as a national heroine today. Using scholar interviews, archival materials, and dramatic reenactment scenes based on her original writings, AUTUMN GEM brings the story of Qiu Jin to life.
