When I was in my 20s, I was given a Chinese puzzle box. It was a lovely object, smooth and elegant and wonderful to touch. It was also an elegant puzzle. The instructions: “Open the box.” Three words. The solution involved thinking (including some sideways thinking) and fooling around. I gather that’s what all science is about - sideways thinking and fooling around.

The idea, I guess, was that one could keep one’s valuables in the box because a thief would find it impossible to open. (A thief could just steal the whole box and break it open with a hammer, but that would disturb the serenity of the universe.) 【国际日報舊金山報導】（記者劉藝霖）在中國起碼有7000年歷史的九連環、七巧版、魯班鎖以及近代的華容道等傳統民間益智遊戲首次被廣泛搜集、系統整理成為一個以「中國益智遊戲」為主題的展覽會，地點是舊金山中華文化中心畫廊，公開讓中西市民瞭解、嘗試、探索富於中國傳統文化特色、民俗特色又充滿科學原理、人生哲理的藝術與智慧結晶品。

Come and play with China’s most famous puzzles. Create tangram constructions of animals, objects and human figures. See if you can separate the nine linked rings. Slide the blocks to help Cao Cao escape through Huarong Pass. Create your own puzzles to take home and share with family and friends. Activities for all ages, led by Wei Zhang, Stan Isaacs and Curt Gabrielson.

At the Chinese Culture Center, on August 9th, 2008 from 12 to 4 pm.
Admission is free and open to everyone.
