The Chinese Culture Center has been hard at work crafting a new educational San Francisco Chinatown tour. The new tour, From Dynasty to Democracy, will lead guests through the cultural threads extending across Chinese history to modern movements for civil rights in America. From Dynasty to Democracy travels through 2,000 years of Chinese and Chinese American history to Chinatown’s struggle for justice, equality and cultural dignity.
Chinatown was established in the very first few years of California’s statehood, and has experienced tremendous discrimination and opportunity. With this complex journey, there is an opportunity to use the lens of Chinatown’s story to educate about California and American history, evolving notions of ethnicity and culture, and the role they play in the evolution of American democracy.
This walking tour will address California Department of Education History and Social Studies Standards for middle school and high school. As such the Chinese Culture Center would like to extend a free invitation for teachers from any public or private K-12 school in California on Saturday, July 14; Wednesday, July 25; Saturday September 15
