Join us this Saturday, March 5th at 1pm to experience...

Join us this Saturday, March 5th at 1pm to experience the 2009-2010 In Search of Roots Interns’ journeys firsthand. Held in the Chinese Culture Center auditorium, the afternoon will focus on Rooters’ highlight moments throughout their experiences both in China and upon returning to San Francisco with new found perspectives on their identity and their community.

Interns with ancestral ties to seven regions in the Pearl River Delta (Taishan, Kaiping, Enping, Chaoshan, Xinhui, Foshan, Zhongshan) will guide the symposium through dialogue, performance, and audience interactions. A special section dedicated to “Raw Rooting,” a term describing the on-the-ground research by interns with minimal concrete details regarding the location of their ancestral homes, will take place following village-based discussions.

Visitors are invited to speak personally with the interns at a 3:30 pm reception, which will be held in the foyer immediately outside the Chinese Culture Center Auditorium. As part of the program’s 20 year anniversary celebrations, the Presentation will also feature the unveiling of the Village Archive, which will for the first time provide a permanent online home for two decades of research chronicling every Rooter’s journey to his or her ancestral village. The project culminates years of archiving and was generously supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The 2010 In Search of Roots Book will also be available for sale.

Doors Open at 12:30pm
Presentation from 1pm
Reception at 3:30pm

For more information, please email us at info@c-c-c.org

On Saturday February 5th 2011 at 2pm, we will be celebrating the opening of our In Search of Roots Program’s exhibition opening. This exhibition is the anthology of the 2009-2010 Roots interns’ explorations and discoveries, and narrates a search for a self-made personal identity that evolves beyond mere recorded history. An understanding of this history, however, allows us to contextualize the powerful impact of heritage upon a dynamic twenty first century identity. Join the CCC in support of the Roots interns’ continued exploration of this cultural discourse, and experience their journey firsthand.

For twenty years, the Roots program has assisted young Americans of Chinese ancestry in their search for a greater appreciation and understanding of their complex identity. Each year, teams of interns engage this task via genealogical research and self-study. Interns begin the yearlong process by researching their own origins in the histories of the people of the Pearl River Delta and Chaoshan regions of Guangdong Province, and the generations of migration to the United States. Interviews with family members and research at the National Archives in San Bruno allows each intern to sketch an image of their ancestral family and of the individuals and events that through family history, Diaspora, and individual choice shaped each intern’s own unique, contemporary identity. This research and study comes full circle during a journey to interns’ ancestral villages in China. Often complex and emotionally overwhelming, this process helps dwarf the gap between past and present, and puts into personal perspective the continuity of an individual journey reflected against that of an entire culture.

Update: The Roots Exhibition is up, running, and getting rave reviews! Check out the Rooters’ creative process here: http://tinyurl.com/4nfua6x
The In Search of Roots Exhibition is open in the CCC gallery until April 20th. The gallery is open from 10am until 4pm Tuesday Through Saturday.

Stella Zhang is the featured artist of the 2010 Xian Rui (“Fresh & Sharp”) Artist Excellence Exhibition Series. The Exhibition Series is an annual solo exhibition curated by the Chinese Culture Center to showcase the work of an exceptional but under-represented Chinese artist in America. In previous years the Series has featured artists such as installation Beili Liu from Austin, and fiber artist Dora Hsiung from Boston.

Join us on August 14th for a dialogue with the artist, moderated by SFAC’s Lucy Lin, as she introduces not only the inspirations and creative process behind her 0-Viewpoint exhibit but hosts the premiere of a documentary on the artistic process behind 0-Viewpoint’s creation. While you’re here, take a tour of the gallery and help yourself to light refreshments.
