Patrons, students, and researchers of Chinese-American culture of Northern California will have a chance to listen to a lecture by Professor Gordon H. Chang on Chinese American Art History at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco on October 10, 2009 at 1:00pm.

In partnership with San Francisco State University, the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco is proud to host a lecture by Gordon H. Chang with opening remarks by Mark Johnson. The lecture is given in conjunction with the exhibition, Chromatic Constructions: Contemporary Fiber Art by Dora Hsiung. Hsiung, a contemporary Asian-American artist, has been adapting traditional yarn wrapping techniques of China and other countries for more than 30 years. The lecture is free to the public and will focus on Chinese-American Art.

In addition, Professors Gordon H. Chang, Mark Johnson, and Paul J. Karlstrom are editors of the ground-breaking book: Asian American Art: A History, 1850-1970. This book is the first comprehensive study of the lives and artistic production of artists of Asian ancestry active in the United States before 1970. An introduction of the book will be included. After the lecture, there will be a short Q&A session for the audience.

Her works of art are a hybrid of traditional weaving, contemporary aesthetics, innovative off-loom weaving techniques, and striking choice of colors. On view now to January 10, 2009 are fifty of Hsiung’s wall hangings, installations and sculptures, many large-scale, will be at the Chinese Culture Center (CCC) in San Francisco as the second exhibit in its Xian Rui (Fresh and Sharp) exhibition series. The Xian Rui series is designed to bring visibility to the work of exceptional, but under-recognized Chinese artists in the US and to give viewers a renewed appreciation and fresh perspective on contemporary Chinese culture. This exhibition series is funded by the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation, which provides 3-year funding for 2008-2010 Xian Rui series. This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Hilton Hotel S.F. Financial District.

Abby Chen, CCC’s Program Director, will give attendees a specially curated tour of the exhibition. Following the tour, there will be an optional hands-on crafts workshop.

cost:free

Gold Mountain Wives is the first Chinese novel ever written about the history of the Taishan people who immigrated to America. The book focuses on the lives of the women who were left behind by their husbands who traveled thousands of miles away to work in Gold Mountain (America). This novel unveils the untold stories of loyalty, betrayal, the separations and struggles, and the eternal hopes and dreams of the Taishanese women. Please join us to celebrate literary history and meet the author at the book preview and signing.

Chinese Culture Center is proud to sponsor “Uncle Toisan.”

“Uncle Toisan” features the unique experience of a Chinese American immigrant to the United States. His eyewitness account bridges the historical relevance of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the modern post-civil rights movement, and the emergence of present-day Asian American consciousness.

Uncle Toisan enters the country as a 17 year old “paper son” (immigrants who purchased legal immigration status as a “paper son” of an American citizen), then perseveres through a two-month detention at Angel Island Immigration Station on the eve of its closing in 1939.

He is then drafted in 1942 to serve in Europe during World War II, returning from the battlefield to face discrimination at home as a laborer in the restaurants and laundries of SF Chinatown. However witnesses and experiences the tremendous changes in Chinatown stemming from the passage of the Civil Rights Act, the final lifting of Exclusion, the growth of Asian American political empowerment and the changing demographics of California due to post Vietnam war rounds of immigration.

“Uncle Toisan” is a new performance by CHSA’s Artist-in-Residence Charlie Chin in the History Alive! storytelling series. It is generously supported by the Creative Connections Fund of the Jame Irvine Foundation, the California Story Fund of California Council for the Humanities, and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.

Here in this exhibit 2008’s twelve interns present to you their journey throughout San Francisco’s Chinatown, the National Archives, and the homes of their ancestral villages. Each brought to the program their own personal history – their own life experiences, and their own identities. Each was searching for something different and of course found distinctive answers. More often, however, they found more questions. You will see in this exhibit their journeys through the Pearl River Delta region of the Guangdong Province of China, and through the counties and municipalities of Guangzhou, Foshan, Doumen, Xinhui, Kaiping, and Taishan. Through this exhibit they attempt to express all that they have learned and so far understand through symbols, photographs, artifacts, and writing. To grasp their complex findings it is essential that you do as they have done this past year – stay flexible, suspend judgment, and keep an open mind.
