Come join us for a celebration of spring! You can watch performances of lion dance, Chinese folk dances, traditional music, and martial arts. There will also be arts and crafts demonstrations, including the ancient art of Chinese Micro-Carving. You can get your fortune told to find out what luck the New year will bring. Also, local chefs will demonstrate regional dishes, and there will be a special appearance on Sunday by Chef Lawrence Chu of Chef Fu’s restaurant in Los Altos! While you’re here, you can stop by the CCC’s current exhibit of “Beautiful Ladies: Vintage Shanghai Deco Posters.”

In 1822, the Tek Sing (”True Star”) set sail from China bound for Java. She was one of the last grand Chinese Junks–in 60m length and over 10m wide. On board were 1,600 passengers and over 200 crew, and a valuable cargo of Chinese porcelain bound for the trading markets of South East Asia. The Tek Sing never completed her journey, floundering on a reef just a few days short of her destination. Due to her size and the weight of the cargo, she sank quickly.

GUMP’s and the Chinese Culture Center present: A Lecture by Nigel Pickford
A native of Lond, England, Nigel is a celebrated maritime historian, specializing in shipqreck research. He owns the world’s most comprehensive private archive on lost cargos. Data from this archive has already led to the recovery of more than 70 high value cargos. He is the author of The Atlas of Shipwreck & Treasure and The Lost Treasure Ships of the Twentieth Century. He will discus and sign copies of his newest book, The Legacy of the Tek Sing: China’s Titanic–It’s Tragedy and Treasure.
