CCC kicks off the first ever Chinatown Music Festival

On Saturday, May 8th, the Chinese Culture Center presented the Chinatown Music Festival in association with Asian Improv aRts, the Chinatown Community Development Center, and the Asian Pacific Islander Culture Center in historic Portsmouth Square. With over four thousand community attendees and presenting five world class bands during six hours of performances, the event allowed for widespread community interaction and was unprecedented for the CCC in its size and scope.

Renowned musicians and local talent including Jon Jang, Wayne Wallace, Jest Jammin, Melody of China, and the Star Valley Childrens’ Choir performed throughout the afternoon and audience members participated in paper cutting and calligraphy presentations at booths managed by community artists Hou Yumei and Zhang Jiaxiu between sets. The Chinese Culture Center gallery enjoyed 800 visitors to Stella Zhang’s 0-Viewpoint exhibition, and the staff was joined by over 50 volunteers throughout the day.

The CCC sends a big thank you to everyone who attended for contributing to a historic day dedicated to community building and public art. Thank you also to all of our community partners and funding supporters, including the California Arts Council, the Department of Justice, the National Endowment for the Arts, the San Francisco Arts Commission, Bank of America, Grants for the Arts, and media sponsor Sing Tao.
