The Chinese Culture Center offers four sessions per year of Brush Painting and Calligraphy classes for adults. Spring, Fall and Winter sessions are 10 weeks, and summer session is 8 weeks. The 2011 Fall Session will be held on October 1 – December 22, every Saturday, with breaks the week of October 8-14 and November 21-26 . Dates are subjected to changes without notice.

Chinese watercolor and brush painting technique will be demonstrated and practiced every class. This class will include an introductory demonstration and hands-on sessions. Class will also cover how to mount on rice paper, scroll making, ad how to cut your name into a stamping stone. A supply list will be provided at the first class meeting.
Students may bring in their own painting supplies or purchase from teacher, Mrs. Madeleine Fu.
Purchase book at CCC gallery shop and buy material directly from the teacher.

About the instructor:
Madeleine Fu (Chu Hsia), born 1922 in Beijing, China. Graduated from Hsin-Hua College of Art in Shanghai. She studied with several renowned masters. Among them, Te-Nien Fu was famous for his calligraphy and paintings of pines, bamboos and plum flowers. They are symbolic in Chinese culture for elegance, humility and fortitude. Madeleine was so treasured a student that Te-Nien Fu encouraged and was delighted at the marriage of Madeline to his son Paul Fu. The Fu family was steeped in scholarly and artistic pursuit and had several generations of well-known artists. Madeleine and Paul both developed into noted young artists in Shanghai. They studied with Master Dai-Chiang Chang, one of the most sought after painters in China, famous for his large-scale landscape brush paintings. Madeleine and Paul came to the US in 1962 and opened Fu’s Art Studio in Mill Valley, CA. They have had many exhibits and demonstrations in the last 20 years in the Bay Area, including the De Young Museum’s Asian Art Center.

Dear CCC,
In celebration of a solar eclipse, the Exploratorium will be hosting an overnight cultural extravaganza on Thursday, July 31, 2008, highlighting the cultures of the Eastern end of the Silk Road. This includes China, Mongolia, and areas inhabited by distinct ethnic minorities, including Uyghur and Kazakh.
We wanted to let visitors try their hand at calligraphy, but in 3 languages: Chinese, Uyghur (arabic script), and Mongolian. We wanted them to get a fun insight into practicing the strokes, as well as develop an appreciation for diverse letter forms and alphabets. We are hoping to give them characters and words that fit with our astronomy theme: sun, moon, stars, sky, earth, etc.
Do you know of any community instructors and/or youth who could facilitate such an activity? If so, I’d be very grateful if you could spread the word to them. If they are bilingual, that would be great, as we hope to do some outreach to the Chinese American monolingual community in the Bay Area.
