Since 1991, In Search of Roots has provided a unique opportunity for young Chinese Americans to explore their history and genealogy and travel to their ancestral villages in Guangdong Province, China. Over two decades, In Search of Roots has given hundreds of young Americans a deeper understanding of themselves, their families, and their identities.
In 2010, years of growing interest among older Chinese Americans to take a similar journey culminated in the inaugural class of Roots Plus interns’ journey through China. Read about their experiences here (中文). We are currently recruiting interested parties for Fall of 2011.
This 2011 group will focus on individuals and families with ancestral roots in the Zhongshan, Taishan (Toisan) and Kaiping (Hoiping) areas of Guangdong province. The program includes preliminary seminars similar to those completed by the In Search of Roots interns, which inform a twelve-day trip through the Pearl River Delta region to bring individuals back in contact with their ancestral villages.
Approximately ten individuals will be selected for this ten to twelve day journey. We anticipate that the cost will be about $1,800 per person, plus air travel cost between San Francisco and Hong Kong. Participants will attend lectures and workshops and conduct research in preparation for the trip to China.
If you are interested in this program, please complete the attached application form and ancestral village form. Applicants are asked to include a short statement or essay (no more than two pages) stating why they want to participate in the program. Please return application materials to CCC as soon as possible. For further inquiries please email ROOTS.PLUS@GMAIL.COM. We will be selecting participants in mid March 2011.
We hope you will join us on this journey of a life time! In Search of Roots Plus!
