In Search of Roots
and Angel Island Field Trip

Attended by CCC members, families and friends, the interns of the 1996 In Search of Roots culminated their year long genealogy research program in a presentation in the auditorium of the CCC. The interns created an exhibition about their research and findings which was shown in the community gallery during Chinese New Year and remained on view through March 30. Many were the praises and encouraging comments from the general public who saw this exhibit. Our thanks go to Pam Tse (Roots '93) and Robert Tse (Roots '96) for volunteering to help us with designing the exhibition.

The 1997 group of "Roots" interns have been selected. They will be involved in the year long program in search of their heritage and family history, and going back to their ancestral villages in China this summer. The new interns are:

  • Julia Fong, Intern Teacher, The Hamlin School
    Alvina Lee, Sophomore, Stanford University
Evan Leong, Senior, Lowell High School
Audrey Low, Freshman, University of California, Berkeley
Karl Ma, Senior, San Francisco State University
Ramford Ng, Junior, University of California, Berkeley
    Rita Ng, Freshman, Stanford University
Michael Ong, Graduate Student, University of California, Berkeley
Allan Yu, City College of San Francisco

The lecture series are open to the public. They are free of charge to members of the Chinese Culture Center and Chinese Historical Society of America; $50 for non members to attend. Please call Manni Liu at the Center (415) 986-1822 if you would like to participate in the lecture series.

In addition, on Saturday, May 10, 1997, the interns, their friends and relatives will visit Angel Island and its Immigration Station. On that day, Judy Yung and Him Mark Lai, both renowned scholars in Chinese American history, will give us a background history of the station which served as a detention center for many Chinese immigrants, and we will be provided with a docent guided tour of the Immigration Station Museum. We invite all CCC members to partake in this meaningful field trip.
